How Often Should You Water Your Lawn in Irving, TX? (Summer Guide)

If you're watering your Irving lawn a little bit every day, you're actually working against yourself. Most lawns here need about an inch to an inch and a half of water per week in summer, but the trick is delivering it in two or three deep soakings early in the morning rather than a daily sprinkle.

Here's why that matters in North Texas specifically.

Our clay soil is the whole problem. Irving sits on heavy clay that drinks slowly. Turn every sprinkler on full blast and most of the water sheets off into the gutter before the ground can absorb it. Slow, deep watering a couple of times a week gives the clay time to soak it in, and it trains your grass to push roots deeper, which is exactly what keeps a lawn alive through a Texas August.

So how much water, really? Aim for roughly 1 to 1.5 inches per week, rain included. The cheap way to measure it: set a few empty tuna cans around the yard, run the sprinklers, and time how long it takes to collect about half an inch. Now you know your schedule.

The best time to water is early morning, ideally between 4 and 9 a.m. The air is still cool, almost nothing evaporates, and the grass dries out as the day warms up. Skip evening watering. Grass that stays damp overnight is how you invite brown patch and other lawn fungus.

Bermuda versus St. Augustine matters too. Bermuda, the sun-loving grass on most Irving lawns, is tougher and can stretch a little longer between waterings. St. Augustine, common in shadier yards, wants steadier moisture and will tell you when it's thirsty fast, turning a dull blue-gray with blades that fold up in the heat.
