Sod Installation in Irving, TX: Best Time to Lay It, Cost & Grass Types

If you want a green, even lawn in Irving without waiting months for seed to fill in, sod is usually the answer. And in our clay-heavy, hot climate, it is often the smarter choice anyway. Here is what actually goes into a good sod job in North Texas.

The good news on timing: you can install sod almost year-round here. The easiest stretch is spring through early fall, when warm soil helps the roots grab hold fast. Summer works fine too, as long as you keep up with watering to beat the heat. The one window to be careful with is the dead of winter, when dormant sod roots slowly. If you want a lawn that is ready to take off in spring, late winter through early spring is a great time to lay it down.

Choosing the right grass matters more than the brand. For most sunny Irving yards, Bermuda sod is the workhorse: tough, drought-tolerant, and happiest in full sun. For shadier yards, St. Augustine is the go-to because it tolerates lower light. Picking the wrong one for your yard's sun is the single most common reason new sod struggles.

Prep is where the whole job is won or lost. Our clay has to be cleared, graded, and loosened so the new roots can actually push down into it instead of sitting on a hard pan. Skip the prep and you end up with sod that browns out in patches a month later. Done right, good prep plus solid root-to-soil contact is what makes separate rolls knit together into one seamless carpet.

The first two weeks are the make-or-break stretch. Fresh sod needs to stay consistently moist while it roots, which usually means watering daily at first, then tapering to deep, less frequent watering once it has anchored. Stay off it as much as you can during that window. Once it is established, sod is actually lower-maintenance than a lawn you grew from seed.

As for cost, sod is priced per square foot, materials plus labor, and the per-foot rate drops as the area gets bigger. The real variable is prep: a yard that needs grading and old-grass removal runs more than a clean, level lot.

We install sod across Irving, Las Colinas, and the surrounding suburbs, and we handle the prep work that makes it last instead of fail. Want a straight quote for your yard? Call or text us at (469) 218-5672 for a free estimate.
